McLEAN, Va. -

Wholesale prices are staying relatively flat and are expected to inch downward over the course of the current week, according to NADA Used Car Guide.

Of all the segments it tracks, large pickups and midsize cars are the only segments that are not expected to fall; they will remain flat this week, NADA UCG predicts.

And in some perhaps fitting news as gas prices continue to rise, the large SUV segment is expected to see the biggest decline over the course of the current week, as prices are expected to drop by 1.9 percent, or $425. The luxury utility segment is also expected to decline by 1.3 percent, or $325.

Per AAA data released this week, the average price of regular grade gasoline (all formulations) increased from $3.82 to $3.84, yet wholesale prices don’t seem to be reflecting the past couple months’ spike in gas rates.

Even with high gas prices, compact cars are expected to decline by 1.5 percent, or $150, followed closely by the luxury car segment, which is expected to decline by .4 percent, or $100.

Consumers do not seem to be jumping to buy gas-sippers this time around, seemingly more confident that gas prices will return to normal in the near future.

Moving along, the compact utility and midsize van segments are expected to fall by $100 apiece, while the midsize utility segment is expected to decline by $25.

Wrapping up their commentary, NADA UCG noted the two-week average rate of depreciation for the compact car segment saw the biggest drop at 2.0 percent followed by the large SUV segment at 1.7 percent.

Four- and two-week AuctionNet wholesale average prices are created by collecting all AuctionNet records for vehicles  up to five years of age for a specified period of time.  Prices are then adjusted for changes in mileage and mix.

Current week prices are based on NADA's proprietary used-vehicle value model, which includes assumptions for new-vehicle prices, used-vehicle supply, gasoline prices, and other economic factors.
