LAS VEGAS — Edmunds.com used the annual Consumer Electronics Show as the platform to hand out a new award to a domestic automaker that's been raking in many honors as of late.

The Web Site gave its first Car Technology Breakthrough Award to the 2010 Ford Taurus. Officials presented the honor to the nameplate's chief executive officer Alan Mulally, who also served as a major speaker at the event that showcases the latest gadgets, computers, television and other technological breakthroughs.

Edmunds.com explained that the basis for its Car Technology Breakthrough Award centers on a vehicle "that sets the standard for intuitive, practical and affordable technology that enhances safety and convenience for drivers and passengers."

The site added that any new vehicle available for sale within the U.S. during the last year was eligible.

Doug Newcomb, senior technology editor for Edmunds.com, further highlighted the reasons why the site went with this Ford vehicle.

"The 2010 Ford Taurus offers a long list of high-tech features at a great price," Newcomb pointed out.

"In addition to the groundbreaking Sync system with voice-activated Bluetooth and iPod connectivity and free features such as navigation and 911 Assist, the 2010 Ford Taurus is available with adaptive cruise control, Sirius Travel Link, heated and cooled massaging seats, keyless entry and SecuriCode entry pad, blind-spot and pre-collision warning systems, a cross-traffic warning system, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera," Newcomb went on to explain.

Along with giving out this award, Edmunds.com officials also received an exclusive preview of another technological advancement Ford is poised to launch. The site examined the new MyFord Touch, a feature that helps drivers and passengers interact with their vehicles even more.

The product also impressed Newcomb greatly.

"Consumers are already seeking vehicles that have the same capabilities as smartphones and MyFord Touch is the first of many innovative devices that are expected to launch," he noted.

"The MyFord Touch will have a similar impact at Ford to help differentiate their vehicles from its competition and help sell more vehicles like Sync has done," Newcomb concluded.
