FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

After working together to sell vehicles for half price this past March, eBay Motors and AutoNation are at it again with a “modern” version of the classic summer tent sale.

Today marks the last day of the two companies’ sale that asks consumers to find out how “low they can go” — with prices for certain models decreasing every hour.

How does the sale work? Starting last Thursday, eBay Motors and partner AutoNation Direct listed more than 50 new 2012 cars and trucks in  AutoNation Direct’s eBay store.

But, here’s the twist. Each vehicle’s listing price, which started at MSRP, decreased significantly every hour, “until one lucky customer decides the time is right to hit ‘buy-it-now’ and make the purchase,” officials explained. The company’s also explained there was no minimum reserve and no limit to how low the prices can go.

For example, a 2012 Nissan Rogue kicked off the promotion, dropping by $500 per hour.

“Prices will drop every hour, on the hour, until the cars are sold—there’s no limit to how low the prices can go!” Kristine Chin, head of eBay Motors, shared before the sale began.

And the listings did not appear all at once.

“Each vehicle listing will appear at various times throughout the sale period in a special online showroom (http://www.ebay.com/new-car-revolution), and will remain there until someone feels the discount is too good to pass up and decides to pull the trigger and buy the vehicle – before someone else does,” officials shared before the sale.

And car shoppers had a bevy of nameplates to choose from, including Chevy, Dodge, Ford, Jeep, Nissan and Toyota.

Models included a Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger, Toyota Prius C, Ford F-150 and Chevy Camaro, among others.

“We saw a great turnout from shoppers on the first day, and the high interest really speaks to the great inventory and value people expect to find on eBay Motors every day,”  Danny Chang, head of marketing and site experience at eBay Motors, told Auto Remarketing on Friday.

"The deals were great and people couldn’t pass them up. We saw every vehicle listed on day one sell in less than 24 hours, with the average discount for the purchased vehicles being just under $8,500 off the original price," he continued

And buyers, who can secure their winning bid with a $500 deposit, can also utilize the promotion on the eBay Motors app, as well.

And, this promotion marked the second time the two companies partnered to offer extreme discounts on new vehicles.

As part of its nationwide launch, AutoNation Direct, the online sales site for dealer group AutoNation, sold more than 25 vehicles for half price through eBay Motors this past March.

The vehicles offered 50 percent off MSRP included units from Ford, General Motors and Nissan within the 2011–2013 model year range.

“A total of 29 Buy It Now vehicle listings are scheduled to appear on eBay Motors at half price over the course of the offer period, including a 2012 Chevrolet Corvette,” officials shared at the time of the sale.

“The variety of vehicles available during the special offer period reflects the wide selection of new vehicles available to customers on eBay Motors at great prices every day,” they added.

eBay Motors has also partnered with Group 1 Automotive, as well.

Last summer, eBay’s Daily Deal website featured more than the normal electronics, home goods and accessories one might expect to find. Deal hunters browsing the site were exposed to deeply discounted vehicles, as well.

Trying something new, Group 1had listed 28 vehicles on the site, including a Chevrolet Corvette offered for $60,305, a price which landed 15 percent below the vehicle’s sticker price.

And how did the promotion turn out?

Well, one of the listed Corvettes boasted 11,000 hits within the first two hours it was posted and 46,000 hits by the end of that very same day.
