GREENSBURG, Pa. -

With multiple family members who are survivors or involved in treatment, Smail Auto Group is making clear its support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The group used more than 5,000 square feet of pink vinyl to cover a section of each of the group’s eight franchised rooftops. It is part of the “Smail Auto Group Cares” campaign.

"As a company, we wanted to do something that would really make a statement and motivate the community to support this vital cause,” stated Jim Smail, who is president of Smail Auto Group and chairman of the American International Automobile Dealers Association

Bud Smail added, “Breast cancer has touched our family, our organization and our community.”

Turns out, two Smail family members — Kathy (Smail) Johnson and Kelly Smail — are breast cancer survivors. And Kathy’s husband, Dr. Ron Johnson, is a breast cancer surgeon at Magee-Women’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The pink covered showrooms are only the beginning of the company’s commitment to supporting breast cancer awareness, screenings, research and education.

Smail plans to donate $100 for every new and used vehicle sold at their dealerships throughout this month. Donations are to be distributed to the Pittsburgh affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Westmoreland Walks’ “Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer.”

Smail employees also intend to raise money for the cause.

Throughout the month, there will be two “Wear Pink” days where they can donate money and stray from the every-day uniform.

“Our employees are our greatest asset and having so many of them rally around this important cause really puts into perspective the impact this disease has on so many people in our community,” Lindsey Smail stated.

“We are just happy that we can use our visibility to raise awareness and funds that will someday contribute to a cure,” Lindsey Smail added.

Customers are also able to help by making a donation when they have their vehicles serviced or repaired at any Smail service center or collision center.

In return for their donation, the first 2,500 supporters to donate will be given a pink breast cancer awareness bracelet.

Furthermore beginning Oct. 15, Smail customers and members of the community are invited to come out to the dealerships to sign the pink areas of the buildings through the end of the month.

Whether it’s in celebration of someone who has survived breast cancer, someone who is currently battling the disease, or in memory of a friend or family member who has lost their battle and is greatly missed, the group hopes to fill the outside of the buildings with messages of hope and remembrance.

Breast cancer awareness is a cause that is very close to the hearts of the Smail family.

“The key is early detection,” Kathy (Smail) Johnson and Kelly Smail explained.

“If the sight of a bright pink Smail building makes even one woman remember that it’s time to get a mammogram or perform a self-breast examination, we have achieved our goal,” they concluded.
