CARMEL, Ind. -

ADESA’s Tom Kontos explained why he noticed wholesale prices still dipped a bit last month but not to the extent they did in June.

According to ADESA Analytical Services’ monthly analysis of wholesale prices by vehicle model class, wholesale used-vehicle prices in July averaged $9,435, which was down 1.3 percent compared to June and 1.3 percent relative to July of last year.

Kontos indicated the biggest hits to price were taken by the van categories and full-size cars, SUVs and CUVs.

“Full-size pickups continue to draw higher prices, as do smaller SUVs and crossovers,” Kontos said.

“Wholesale prices continued to soften in July but less so than in June as retail demand cushioned the blow to prices that otherwise would have occurred given continuing supply growth,” he continued.

Kontos pointed out that another group of vehicles drawing higher prices is off-rental program units sold by auto manufacturers.

ADESA discovered prices for used vehicles remarketed by manufacturers were up 3.0 percent month-over-month and 3.9 percent year-over-year.

The auction company noticed prices for fleet/lease consignors were down 0.6 percent sequentially but up 3.2 percent annually.

ADESA also went on to note dealer consignors saw a 0.3-percent average price decrease in July versus June and a 2.1-percent downturn versus last July.

Kontos wrapped up his monthly commentary by citing data from CNW Research that showed retail used-vehicle sales were “somewhat flat on both a month-over-month and year-over year basis in July, but nevertheless sales remain at historically high levels on a year-to-date basis.

“Year-to-date sales through July are at their highest levels since 2005 and are up 3.5 percent year-over-year for franchised dealers and 2.4 percent for independent dealers,” Kontos said.

“Sales of certified pre-owned vehicles were down modestly at 1.5 percent month-over-month, but up significantly at 21.0 percent year-over-year, based on figures from Autodata,” he went on to say.
