GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Snow and ice have cast a big swath across the U.S. this winter. This inclement weather has served in part to keep truck and SUV prices high at auction, along with low prices at the pump.

With an average of 1,864 vehicle prices adjusted per day last week in the lanes, Black Book’s Ricky Beggs said, “The weather may not have cooperated but our gas buddies are still treating us pretty good …,” in his latest “Beggs on the Used Car Market” video report.

In fact, this past week was the first time in the past six weeks there has been a week-over-week increase in gas prices, Beggs said, and it was only up by $0.02.

“We are still $0.30 cheaper per gallon for gas and $0.12 better today for diesel than the year ago period,” Beggs said.

And this trend is showing in the lanes.

The average price decline for trucks last week came in at $38. This number marks smallest weekly decline for the since the week ending Sept. 6, Beggs said.

Another larger segment, the cargo minivans, actually increased by $3.

The other segments with the softest declines were the full-size pickups (down $9), the compact SUVs (down $11) and the compact pickups at (down $14), according to Black Book data.

NADA Used Car Guide was predicting similar results last week, with the biggest price increases expected to be seen among the large SUVs.

The biggest price spike was expected in the large SUV segment last week, according to NADA UCG, perhaps not surprising due to the winter storm Pax that hit the East Coast Valentine's Day week.

The large SUV segment was expected to see prices grow by 1 percent (or $300) versus the two-week average, according to NADA UCG.

For the cars, according to Black Book data, price retention has been consistent for the past three weeks — coming in with average declines of $47, $43 and $48, respectively.

The second half of this week’s report from Beggs includes a short interview with Frank Hackett, chief executive officer of the National Auto Auction Association.
