DETROIT — At the North American International Auto Show this week, the 2010 EyesOn Design Awards were unveiled, and taking home this year's top honors were the GMC Granite Concept and the Audi A8.

The Granite Concept won in the concept category, defeating finalists Nissan Mixim, Revenge Verde Supercar and the Audi eTron concept.

Meanwhile, the A8 received honors in the production category for the Award for Design Excellence, defeating fellow finalists Bentley Muslanne, Fiat 500, Ford Focus and Lincoln MKX.

For vehicles to be up for consideration, it is mandatory that they made their debut during NAIAS.

The award is voted on by a jury that is comprised of a global group of auto and industrial designers. Leading the judges are three head judges, who for this year, were:

— Willie Davidson, Harley-Davidson executive vice president and chief styling officer

— Tom Matano, executive director of industrial design at the Academy of Art University

— Jack Telnack, Ford global vice president of design (retired)

Offering the automaker's reaction to winning the award, Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management of Audi AG, noted: "The new Audi A8 is the sportiest sedan in its segment. It combines numerous functions in a new and intelligent way. And it's unmatched in the stylistic elements and impression of the interior."
