RICHMOND, Va. -

Things have come full circle for Mark O’Neil.

The former Cox Automotive chief operating officer who retired in March was named to the board of directors at CarMax, a company he helped develop and launch.

O’Neil was with CarMax from 1992 until 2000, including time as its vice president from 1997 to 2000.

“Mark is an automotive industry veteran with significant experience in bringing digital innovations to market,” CarMax chief executive officer Bill Nash said in a news release. “I am thrilled he is joining our board and we look forward to leveraging his expertise as we continue to build a seamless integration between the in-store and online customer experience.”

From 2001 to 2015, O’Neil was CEO and a board member at Dealertrack, and became COO at Cox Automotive in 2016 not long after that company purchased Dealertrack.

(Cox Automotive purchased Dealertrack in 2015. That’s when he became the president of the Cox Automotive Software Group.)

O’Neil’s time at Dealertrack also included roles as president (2001 to 2014) and chairman (2005 to 2015).

Shortly after announcing in September 2018 that he would be retiring in early 2019, O’Neil chatted with Nick Zulovich for an episode of the Auto Remarketing podcast, which can be found below.
