PITTSBURGH -

Former NAAA president Dave Angelicchio, who was the longtime chairman and chief executive officer of his family’s auto auction before retirement, died Sunday in Pittsburgh, the National Auto Auction Association announced.

Angelicchio, who fought a long bout with cancer, was 67.

In the 1990s, he became the general manager of the D-A Auto Auction opened by his uncle in 1978 that was renamed Pittsburgh Independent Auto Auction.

Angelicchio became chairman and CEO of PIAA by 1996, a role he held for the next two decades.

ADESA purchased the auction in 2015, renaming it ADESA Pittsburgh.

Angelicchio was NAAA president from 2010 to 2011 and served in other roles for the association, including time as chairman of the board and treasurer. He was inducted into the NAAA Hall of Fame in 2017.

“Under Dave’s successful leadership, NAAA reached some major milestones and arrived at many noteworthy achievements that were unprecedented in our organization's history,” NAAA CEO Frank Hackett said in a release.

“And the policies established during his tenure have had a positive impact on our industry,” Hackett said. “He will be greatly missed.”

In a statement, Tom Caruso, who is executive vice president and chief client officer at ADESA, said: “Dave Angelicchio was well respected in the auto auction industry, a true forward-thinker. He played a vital role in advancing the National Auto Auction Association as president, chairman of the board and treasurer. It was my honor to help induct him into the NAAA Hall of Fame two years ago. His legacy lives on through his children and family members at ADESA Pittsburgh and ADESA Mercer. All of us at ADESA send his family our deepest condolences.”
