McLEAN, Va. -

Auction prices are on the way up as tax returns flow in. NADA Used Car Guide is predicting prices to grow by 1 percent (or $175) versus the two-week average.

And every segment NADA UCG tracks is expected to see price hikes, except for theone outlier: luxury cars, which are expected to see a slight decline of 0.1 percent ($25).

As far as gains go, dealers will have to shell out a bit more to acquire midsize cars and compact and mid-size utilities for their lots.

The midsize car segment is supposed to see prices rise by 2.4 percent (or $325), notching the biggest price spike this week.

NADA UCG reported midsize cars will be followed by compact cars, which are expected to see average price gains of 2 percent ($225).

Compact and midsize utilities are expected to grow by 1.6 percent ($250) and 1.5 percent ($325), respectively.

Smaller gains will be seen in the large pickup, large SUV, luxury utility and midsize van segments, which are each expected to grow by under 1.0 percent, according to NADA UCG data.

As gas prices remain low — though rising slightly the past two weeks — and winter weather hasn’t seemed to let up much yet, prices remain strong for the larger units.

According to Energy Information Administration data released this week, the average price of regular grade gasoline (all formulations) grew from $3.44 to $3.48 per gallon.

Four- and two-week AuctionNet wholesale average prices are created by collecting all AuctionNet records for vehicles up to five years of age for a specified period of time.  Prices are then adjusted for changes in mileage and mix.

Current week prices are based on NADA's proprietary used vehicle value model which includes assumptions for new vehicle prices, used vehicle supply, gasoline prices, and other economic factors.
