Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation gifts Nature Conservancy $30M for water project

ST. LOUIS - 

The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation announced a $30 million project donation to The Nature Conservancy on Monday.

The company’s donation will be spread across five-years and be used for a project designed to help protect and preserve four major rivers and watersheds throughout North America and Europe, including the Mississippi River and Colorado River.

“My family and our company have deep roots in St. Louis, and one of the world's greatest rivers runs right through our hometown,” granddaughter of Enterprise founder Jack Taylor and foundation senior vice president and executive director Kindle Betz said in a news release. “But in light of Enterprise's international expansion, it was important that this gift benefit communities and their surrounding environment worldwide. We hope it will help more and more people understand and support the critical role rivers play in our lives.”

The project is called the "Routes & Roots: Enterprise Healthy Rivers Project," and it will support The Nature Conservancy's long-term water resource management initiatives, which benefit 150 million people, according to the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation.

“This contribution is one of the biggest gifts we have received in many years,” Mark Tercek, president and chief executive officer of The Nature Conservancy, said. 

“It will benefit both people and wildlife across two continents, while facilitating the sharing of best practices to drive global progress in conservation. This effort to preserve great rivers is about more than just protecting fresh water today – it also demonstrates Enterprise's leadership, vision and commitment to making a difference for the long term,” he continued. 

The $30 million project highlights the strategic importance of rivers and regional watersheds, the company said.

In addition to supplying drainage and outflow for rainfall and streams, they strengthen habitats, generate renewable energy and provide cost-efficient transportation options.

“Our philanthropic focus is not always directly related to our business, but instead reaches beyond to make a difference and improve the quality of life wherever our employees and customers live and work,” added Betz. “We're thrilled to support and partner with a world-class organization like The Nature Conservancy in this effort to help ensure that healthy rivers continue to enrich our lives for generations to come.”

The Enterprise Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand and Enterprise Holdings.

Roundup: Auction charity sale, expansion & more

CARY, N.C. - 

During the President’s Gala held during next week’s NAAA Annual Convention festivities in the second block of Used Car Week, there will be a new fundraiser (Chapter Charity Auction) to benefit five charities.

The Gala itself is on Nov. 16 from 7 p.m. (PT)  to 9 p.m.

In addition to identifying the four charities to support, each NAAA chapter selected four exclusive items to go on the block for the charity new sale.

The auction items include a two-day high performance driving course package, a men’s Rolex watch with a gold NAAA logo, a 2018 Masters Golf Tournament package, along with a his and her Rolex and Louis Vuitton package featuring a two watches paired with a wallet and mini purse.

Proceeds from the sale will go to House in the Woods, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Lynnway Accident Fund, Victory Junction and the American Cancer Society.

Calif. auction gears up for new expansion

AVDA Auction recently announced plans to add a fourth lane to its newly expanded location in North Hollywood, Calif. in January.

The company said its upcoming expansion is in response to high weekly inventory at the auction.

The location runs approximately 900 cars weekly, with highline vehicles making up about 20 percent of the inventory, according to AVDA.

“AVDA Auction the simple choice in auto auctions and has become a must-attend auction for dealers who are looking to buy or sell highline units,” AVDA Auction vice president Justin Soghomonian said in a news release. 

KIA joins CFAA

On Oct. 25 Kia Motors America began selling its vehicles through Columbus Fair Auto Auction.

“We are pleased to welcome Kia Motors America to Columbus Fair Auto Auction,” CFAA chief executive officer Alexis Jacobs said in a news release.

“As we continue to differentiate ourselves in the auction community, Kia will be the beneficiary of our targeted marketing approach and our willingness to experiment with technology to nurture our buyer base.”

This sale, along with all sales at CFAA, can be accessed via simulcast and on IAS Marketplace and CFAA.com.

Spokane LHM dealerships to fund Thanksgiving dinner for less fortunate

SPOKANE, Wash. - 

Larry H. Miller Dealerships announced Monday that, for the fourth consecutive year, its Larry H. Miller Lexus, Larry H. Miller Downtown Toyota, Larry H. Miller Honda and Larry H. Miller Hyundai dealerships will fund the Union Gospel Mission’s annual City-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner for more than 1,000 homeless and low-income individuals and families.

In addition to a $5,000 donation, LHM said it will donate turkeys for every car sold or leased at the participating dealerships from this coming Thursday to Nov. 22.

Last year, LHM gave more than 150 turkeys to the Union Gospel Mission, according to the group.

This year’s dinner will be held at the Spokane Convention Center on Nov. 22 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

“Our employees really look forward to supporting the City-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner each year,” Larry H. Miller Lexus Spokane general manager Bob McLean said in a news release.

“When they’re out shopping for their own Thanksgiving gathering, many of them will purchase an extra turkey to donate to the UGM dinner. In addition, we all enjoy volunteering together as a group to serve the dinner to our neighbors. It’s quite meaningful to see exactly how our donations help and who they help,” he continued.

“On a holiday that’s all about gratitude, we’re very thankful to Larry H. Miller Dealerships for underwriting the City-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner for the fourth year in a row,” Union Gospel Mission executive director Phil Altmeyer said. “They share our heart for this event, which is about showing people who feel down-and-out that they are valuable. Serving a special meal tells people that in a way words can’t express.”

The Union Gospel Mission has worked with underprivileged residents of Spokane since 1951.

In its more than 65 years, the organization has grown from a soup kitchen into a ministry made up of four shelters, two thrift stores, an automotive business and a summer camp for youth.

“It’s important to us to give back and support those who are less fortunate in our downtown neighborhood. We hope that partnering with the Union Gospel Mission in providing a warm meal and a special place to gather brings joy during the holiday season,” added Scott Brewer, general manager at Larry H. Miller Downtown Toyota Spokane.

GM Financial to donate car to Boston Ronald McDonald House

FORT WORTH, Texas - 

GM Financial announced Monday that it has chosen the Ronald McDonald House at Boston to receive a vehicle as apart of its Cool Cars for Remarkable Kids program.

The Ronald McDonald House at Boston Harbor is the 18th Ronald McDonald House to receive a vehicle since the program launched earlier this year.

This month, GM Financial also presented Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio with two vehicles.

“Among the myriad of challenges confronting Ronald McDonald House visitors is access to reliable and cost-effective transport to and from hospitals and treatment centers,” GM Financial president and chief executive officer Dan Berce said in a news release.

“Our Cool Cars for Remarkable Kids program seeks to meet this need by offering a mobility solution for Ronald McDonald House families. We are pleased to extend the program in Boston and contribute to the critically important work this organization is doing for the children and families it serves.”

The Boston Harbor house joins other participating locations in Texas, North Carolina, Arizona and Michigan. These are regions where GM Financial maintains a significant commercial or employment presence, according to the company.

“The housing need for families visiting Boston for its world-class hospitals is critical,” said Karen McEachern, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern New England. “The Cool Cars for Remarkable Kids program provides families seamless transportation between their apartment here at the Ronald McDonald House at Boston Harbor to their treatment hospitals — another way we can now deliver on our mission to keep families close.”

This year, GM Financial said it plans to gift a total of 30 vehicles nationwide.

Barrett-Jackson charity sale raises $1 million for Las Vegas first responders

LAS VEGAS - 

Barrett-Jackson recently raised $1 million for Las Vegas first responders during its 10th annual Las Vegas Auction at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

The five charity vehicles featured in the sale included a rare 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake owned by Barrett-Jackson president Steve Davis, which sold for $1 million, according to Barrett-Jackson.

“As a former police officer, I understand the incredible heroism that was shown by Las Vegas’ first responders during the recent tragedy,” Davis said in a news release. “This Shelby is an incredibly special car to me, and I’m grateful to be part of the Barrett-Jackson family and show that we are all Vegas Strong. We are all America Strong.”

The 1 million will benefit Las Vegas first responders through the Injured Police Officers Fund.

The organization’s mission is to help lessen the financial burden suffered by first responders, trauma personnel, nurses, police officers and their families in the event of a line of duty injury or death.

“Our hearts go out to the hundreds of families and friends who were victims in October 1st Las Vegas mass shooting,” said Minddie Lloyd, executive director of the Injured Police Officers Fund. “These were our fellow Nevadans, our friends. Like the rest of the world, we mourn with you. In the face of this tragedy, there was so much courage: From first responders charging into the middle of the chaos to everyday citizens who helped remove and get the wounded to emergency care.

“We may never fully understand in this life why we face tragedies of sorrow, pain and suffering; at least over 500 people injured, and 58 innocent lives lost. But it is important to know that we trust in our community and Steve Davis and Barrett-Jackson. From The Injured Police Officers Fund please know we will be by your side. Nevada will not fail you,” she went on to say.

The winning bidder of the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake is Paulette Carpoff, chief operating officer of DC Solar.

“DC Solar is proud to be a part of the Las Vegas community. We want the first responders to know, especially in the wake of the recent tragedy, that we stand with you and we are proud to help however we can,” Carpoff said.

Manheim to host charity auction for NIADA Foundation at NABD event

ORLANDO, Fla. - 

The National Alliance of Buy-Here, Pay-Here Dealers, Manheim and the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association are all rallying during the East Coast BHPH Conference that begins on Monday to help operators still impacted by hurricane damage.

Officials from NABD and Manheim confirmed with Auto Remarketing on Friday that a golf cart will be auctioned off by the staff from Manheim Orlando during the conference with the proceeds benefitting NIADA Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey relief campaign.

Officials said the item will be at Manheim’s conference booth, and the sale will take place during Tuesday evening’s networking session.

NABD also highlighted that operators who can’t get away from their stores for all three days of the conference can attend for at least a day. Dealers can gain important training, industry updates and networking opportunities for just $150 on Monday, $250 on Tuesday or $100 on Wednesday. To learn more, call (832) 767-4759.

And in the process, attendees can help NIADA’s philanthropic efforts.

The Disaster Relief Fund was established by the NIADA Foundation to provide a venue for members of the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association and its industry partners to assist fellow dealers and others in the automotive community affected by the recent storms.

The NIADA Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that serves as the focal point of NIADA’s charitable efforts and coordinates the association’s charitable giving.

Perhaps the bidding for this golf cart will generate at least a portion what conference exhibitor gave recently as Spireon contributed $100,000 to NIADA’s charity arm.

The NIADA Foundation will continue to fund hurricane relief efforts in the coming months.

Barrett-Jackson, The NASCAR Foundation to auction Jeep for Las Vegas ER personnel

LAS VEGAS - 

The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company and the NASCAR Foundation will host the charity sale of a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Red Rock Edition on Thursday to raise funds for the UNLV School of Medicine Dept. of Emergency Medicine Residency Program Fund.

The fund helps provide physicians training as emergency medicine specialists at UMC, Nevada’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, where victims of the recent Las Vegas shooting continue to be treated.

“Like Barrett-Jackson, our friends at NASCAR have strong ties to Las Vegas and were deeply saddened by the recent tragic event,” Barrett-Jackson chairman and chief executive officer Craig Jackson said in a news release. “We’re so proud this longtime partner of ours is stepping up to help the medical personnel who are fighting daily to save the lives of those injured. It is just one of many initiatives to help to show our support for Las Vegas at this difficult time.”

The rare Jeep hails from the personal collection of NASCAR vice chairman and chairman of The NASCAR Foundation Mike Helton. It is one of less than 50 production vehicles built by Jeep and inspired by the celebration of the 50th Annual Easter Safari in Moab, Utah.

“It’s an honor to donate this vehicle to benefit the UNLV School of Medicine Dept. of Emergency Medicine Residency Program Fund,” Helton said. “We were reminded of the importance of emergency room personnel two weeks ago in Las Vegas. The work that was done under the most trying of circumstances was admirable – and invaluable. This is a cause the Foundation is proud to support, and we urge others to do so.”

The charity sale will take place during Barrett-Jackson’s 10th annual three-day Las Vegas Auction at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, where Helton and NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace will be present as the rare Jeep crosses the block at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Cox Auto honors Motorcars Honda with Leader in Sustainability Award

Cox Automotive presented its third annual Leader in Sustainability Award to Motorcars Honda this past week.

The award, which was given out at the at the 2017 Automotive News Best Dealerships to Work For celebration, honors dealerships that promote green business practices and make a difference through community service.

The dealership will receive $10,000 to fund a sustainability project, as well as an energy audit from the Cox Conserves team.

“At Cox, being good stewards of the environment and inspiring others to protect our national resources is in our DNA,” said Joe George, Manheim senior vice president of vehicle advantage. “Motorcars Honda is a wonderful example of conservation commitment in action, and we’re excited to celebrate their success with the Cox Automotive Leader in Sustainability Award.”

Cox Automotive said it has recognized Motorcars Honda for its conservation efforts surrounding carbon, water and waste.

In addition to implementing a recycling program designed to encourage staff and customers to limit waste, the dealership installed the largest singular solar array of any dealership that generates 50 to 70 percent of the store’s energy needs.

Motorcars Honda is the first carbon-neutral dealership in the world, according to Cox Automotive.

Additionally, the dealership also uses recycled water in their Rainforest Car Wash to conserve water.

“Like our team at Motorcars Honda, Cox Automotive understands that every step we take today toward conservation helps shape a better future for our children and our communities,” said Chuck Gile, owner of Motorcars Honda. “We are honored to be recognized for our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment and inspire change in our employees and neighbors.”

Just last year, the dealership hosted a Solar Car Derby, where participants competed for the chance to win an iPad mini.

During the event, Motorcars Honda donated and distributed over 150 solar panel car kits to local community families. Children built and decorated their own solar panel cars to race, while also learning about sustainability, according to Cox Automotive.

Cox Auto helps in ongoing Puerto Rico hurricane recovery

ATLANTA and SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Friday that during the next seven days, 20 million meals and more than 11 million liters of water would be arriving on Puerto Rico.   

After confirming the safety of all 30 employees on the island, Cox Automotive put in motion a variety of initiatives to help the Manheim Caribbean team and their families as well as other citizens impacted by Hurricane Maria.

According to an update shared with Auto Remarketing on Friday, Cox Automotive:

— Airlifted in and delivered 10,000 pounds of water and two water filtration systems; generators, batteries, tarps and other emergency supplies along with 480 MREs (Meal Ready-to-Eat rations) which the Manheim Caribbean general manager explained how to use.

— Worked with a local contractor to transfer 820 gallons of diesel fuel to the auction site to power the generators.

— Delivered checks to employees from the Cox Employee Relief Fund, providing humanitarian assistance.

“Because supporting our employees remains one of our most important values,” the company reiterated that Manheim team members can access funds from its in-house charitable organization that helps those impacted by natural disasters, injury or illness, or loss of a family member with:

— Household necessities including furniture, kitchenware and linens

— Clothing and school supplies

— Home insurance deductibles

— Hotel expenses for short-term stays

— Rental cars to get employees to work and children to school

The Cox Automotive efforts are working alongside with what FEMA has been trying to do since the Category 4 hurricane blasted Puerto Rico on Sept. 20.

To date, FEMA, working in coordination with federal partners, has provided more than 8 million meals, and 6 million liters of water to Puerto Rico. At the direction of the government of Puerto Rico, FEMA and its partners deliver commodities to Regional Staging Areas (RSA) across the island, where mayors and local officials from municipalities can pick up food, water and other supplies.

Additionally, FEMA is sending direct shipments of meals and water to municipalities designated by PREMA. These shipments can be delivered by truck, or in cases where roads are inaccessible, by air. 

Officials said this is the longest air support food-drop mission in the history of the agency.

FEMA delivers roughly 200,000 meals a day. This is supplemented by the more than 300,000 additional meals distributed each day by organizations like the Salvation Army, Feeding America, the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen, Convoy of Hope, World Vision, and Southern Baptist. These groups, along with other voluntary agencies, deliver and distribute across the island, to shelters and to senior centers on a daily basis.

The Departmento de Educacion is providing meals to more than 5,700 occupants in shelters, and distributing food to 224 schools working as community food centers, while also allowing children to do activities on site.

“As more stores open across the island where food, water, and other commodities can be purchased, there will be a lesser need for provided meals and water, allowing FEMA and its partners to continue to focus on the harder to reach communities,” officials said.

Spireon donates $100K to NIADA for hurricane relief; IIADA names dealer of the year

CARY, N.C. - 

NIADA announced Tuesday that Spireon will contribute $100,000 to the NIADA Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund to help members of the automotive community recover from hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The association said Spireon chose to give to the NIADA Foundation Disaster Relief Fund because it was the quickest way to contribute to the customers and the communities the company serves.

 "Our hearts and prayers go out to the folks whose lives have been impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma," Spireon chief executive officer Kevin Weiss said in a news release.

"We know the road has not been easy over the past few weeks, and we know the recovery efforts will continue for months to come. We are incredibly thankful for the support our customers have shown us over the years and feel very fortunate to be in a position to give back to these impacted communities," he continued.

Spireon will use its NSpire platform to provide data to customers to help them get their businesses running and assess next steps in wake of the storms, according to Weiss.

"When Spireon heard the NIADA Foundation had created the Emergency Relief Fund, it quickly rallied and offered a major financial commitment to help those affected by the catastrophic storms," said Steve Jordan, NIADA's CEO and president of the NIADA Foundation board of trustees. "We appreciate that Spireon understands recovery doesn't happen overnight, and we are looking forward to working with Kevin Weiss and his entire team to advance our shared goals of helping all members of the independent dealer community get back on their feet again."

 The Disaster Relief fund was established by the NIADA Foundation to enable members and industry partners to help fellow dealers and others in the automotive community in need.

 NIADA said the foundation will continue funding hurricane relief efforts in the coming months.

Fort Wayne store named Quality Dealer of the Year

Meanwhile, in other auto community news, the Indiana Independent Automobile Dealers Association recently announced that Grote Automotive of Fort Wayne, Ind. is its 2017 “Joe Krier” Quality Dealer of the Year.

Owner Fred Grote recently accepted the award at the association’s 30th Anniversary Golf Tournament and Awards Day held at Ironwood Golf Club.

Grote Automotive was started by Grote and his wife Jackie in 2007.

“‘For The People’ is the guiding drive behind the success of the dealership,” the association said in a news release.

“Fred has instilled in the staff that customers are to always feel respected and be given the most enjoyable and fun car buying experience they have ever had.”

In addition to recognizing dealerships and dealers that have a record of being consumer-oriented, award winners must also represent themselves as a civic leader in their community.

The Grote’s have fostered over 30 children and adopted four as their own. Currently, two of their children are involved in the business.

Grote Automotive will represent Indiana at the NIADA Convention in Orlando, Fla. in June. The dealership will compete with Quality Dealers from other states for the National Quality Dealer of the Year title.

Additionally, this year, the dealership was named one of Indiana’s Top 100 Best Places to Work and No. 1 in Fort Wayne.
