McLEAN, Va. -

Auction prices are still slowing inching up – a trend NADA Used Car Guide said it expects to continue through March as spring approaches.

Overall, much like last week, NADA anticipates used-vehicle prices will continue to improve by 0.2 percent, or $25, relative to the prior week.

"Across segments, expected changes are predominantly positive, with prices for only two segments — luxury utilities and luxury cars — predicted to remain unchanged or to decline slightly," NADA UCG officials reported.

The segments expected to see the biggest increases this week are the mid-size van segment as prices are expected to grow by 0.5 percent or $75.

The compact car, large SUV, and mid-size utility segments are all expected to increase by about $50 apiece.

On the other hand, the luxury car segment is expected to decline by 0.1 percent, or $25, "making it the only segment expected to see a loss," according to NADA.

The organization also explained these positive numbers support its predications that wholesale prices will begin to increase at an accelerated rate towards the end of February and through March.

"We are starting to observe this lift in some of the segments already," officials added.

And gas prices continue to rise, which may begin to show effects in the lanes as well as on dealership lots.

Per Energy Information Administration data released this week, the average price of regular grade gasoline (all formulations) increased by fourteen cents from $3.61 to 3.75.  This is sixteen cents higher than what was recorded for the same week last year, reported NADA.

Four- and two-week AuctionNet wholesale average prices are created by collecting all AuctionNet records for vehicles  up to five years of age for a specified period of time.  Prices are then adjusted for changes in mileage and mix.

Current week prices are based on NADA's proprietary used-vehicle value model which includes assumptions for new-vehicle prices, used-vehicle supply, gasoline prices, and other economic factors.
