McLEAN, Va. -

Though compact utilities and large picks are expected to see a slight uptick in prices this week, auction rates overall are predicted to continue dropping as November kicks off.

NADA Used Car Guide expects wholesale prices to fall by an average of 0.4 percent, or $50.

The two segments bucking the trend are compact utilities and large pickups, which are expected to see prices rise by 0.4 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, compact cars are expected to see the biggest price decline this week, predicted to fall by 1.6 percent, or $150 per unit.

Perhaps affecting price retention in the more fuel efficient segments, such as the compact cars, gas prices are continuing to drop.

Energy Information Administration data released this week shows that the average price of regular grade gasoline (all formulations) fell again, this time by about two cents from $3.29 per gallon to $3.27.

Midsize vans are also expected to see a significant decrease, falling by 1.2 percent or $150.

“Smaller losses are expected in all remaining segments,” said David Paris, automotive analyst for NADA UCG said.

Large SUVs, luxury cars and midsize cars are all expected to fall within a tight range of 0.4 percent to 0.6 percent, he reported.

Lastly, luxury utility and mid-size utility segments are expected to remain flat versus their two-week averages.

Four- and two-week AuctionNet wholesale average prices are created by collecting all AuctionNet records for vehicles  up to five years of age for a specified period of time.  Prices are then adjusted for changes in mileage and mix.

Current week prices are based on NADA's proprietary used-vehicle value model which includes assumptions for new-vehicle prices, used-vehicle supply, gasoline prices, and other economic factors.
