BANDON, Ore. -

Not only did used-car sales go up more than 4 percent last month, significantly more people ventured out of their own markets to buy used vehicles.

That’s according to CNW Research, which said Monday that there were 3.10 million used sales in November, a 4.5-percent year-over-year increase.

And the number of those buyers who left their marketing area to make a purchase was up 44 percent from November 2012 and climbed 8 percent from October, CNW indicated.

Looking at the overall used sales total for November, franchised dealers had the strongest increase, as their sales rose 10.3 percent and came in at 1.20 million.

“Franchised dealers are having an excellent used-car month, estimated to be up nearly 10 percent versus a year ago. This is especially true for large retailers such as CarMax and AutoNation,” CNW president Art Spinella said in an analysis last week before sales results were announced.

“But even smaller dealers are harvesting a windfall of shoppers who say they are looking to shed an older vehicle that simply doesn’t have the features and reliability needed,” he added.

Independent dealers moved 1.14 million used units (up 5 percent) and there were 755,386 casual sales (down 4 percent).

CNW also found that passenger cars had a smaller slice of the used-car pie last month. Their share was at 48 percent, against 49 percent in November and 53 percent in October.

This shift toward trucks had an impact on the movement for brands, as well, CNW found.  Used sales of domestic vehicles climbed 14.8 percent year-over-year and jumped 1.2 percent month-over-month.

As for Asian-brand vehicles, their used sales fell 2.7 percent from November 2012 and dipped 5.8 percent from October.
