WASHINGTON, D.C. -

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced this week its receipt of an expanded air bag recall for certain Honda vehicles.

Added to the previous recall, notated as 14V-351, are vehicles as follows: certain 2001 Honda Accord, certain 2004 Honda Civic, and certain 2008 Honda Pilot vehicles. The potential issue with these vehicles, the same as the previous recall, is due to a possible issue with their air bag inflators during the deployment of the driver-side frontal air bag.

According to the NHTSA, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver-side frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring vehicle occupants. Honda plans to remedy the situation by notifying the vehicles owners and instructing dealers to replace the driver-side frontal air bags in all affected vehicles free of charge to the customer.
