GREENSBURG, Pa. -

In its largest fundraising effort to date, Smail Auto Group announced Tuesday that it raised more than $60,000 in support of Troops First Foundation.

As part of the group’s Smail Auto Group Cares campaign, and in honor of Memorial Day, the project featured a monetary donation for every new and used vehicle sold throughout May. Additional funds were raised via the company’s social media presence.

The Troops First Foundation was co-founded by Rick Kell and Smail Auto Group spokesperson David Feherty. All of the funds raised go directly to programs and initiatives of this organization, which reaches out to military members and their families.

“By partnering with Troops First Foundation, we know that every dime that was donated is going directly to life-enhancing programs that support and bring closure to soldiers that have risked their lives for our freedom,” group president Jim Smail explained.

Among the initiatives of Troops First Foundation is Operation Proper Exit, in which wounded soldiers in recovery are offered the opportunity to return to the specific sites in Iraq where they were injured, in order to gain closure and view the progress made in that country as a result of their sacrifice.

Feherty noted that every person who bought a vehicle from a Smail dealership or supported the cause on Facebook throughout May contributed to this donation.

“Every dollar generated helps make the often difficult lives of those who were selfless enough to answer the call a little easier,” Feherty said. “They have given us a quality of life that some Americans take for granted, so thank you for helping to pay back a small part of the debt we will always owe them.”

Smail Auto Group reports its previous one-month fundraising record was more than $50,000 raised for breast cancer awareness in October 2011.
