SAN FRANCISCO -

Shift Technologies said Thursday it has named Toby Russell president of the San Francisco-based online used-car marketplace.

Russell joined the company in November 2015 after working for Capital One as managing vice president of digital, and has been one of its key leaders

Russell also co-founded Taxi Magic alongside Shift chief executive officer George Arison.

“Toby first pushed me to think about the auto space and we are very fortunate to have him on board at Shift,” Arison said in a news release. “We believe that by leveraging technology, offering an awesome financing product, and delivering test drives directly to customers we can change the future of car ownership for customers in urban centers. Toby’s work at Capital One, where he led technology innovation, makes him the perfect fit for this new role.”

In addition to his time with Capital One and Taxi Magic, Russell has also worked for the U.S. Department of Energy, where he led a $12 billion renewable energy and efficiency investment program.

“I am excited to take on this new role and help grow Shift to serve more customers in more markets,” Russell said in the release.

“Customers love Shift because our our product combines an amazing online experience with an offline test drive that is delivered to the customer's location, avoiding the need to go to a big box auto sales location in the outer suburbs,” he said. “We can do this cost effectively because we leverage technology for customer engagement and logistics, giving customers a much needed better option.”
