CARMEL, Ind. -

After years of tight used inventory following the 2008 recession, supply is on the road to recovery. And it’s showing in the lanes. Not only are dealers seeing more of the quality, pre-owned units they need, they are also experiencing much lower prices than seen in the past few years.

In fact, wholesale used  prices in June averaged $9,516, according to data from ADESA Analytical Services. This number is down 2.9 percent from May and 2.7 percent relative to June 2012.

ADESA’s Tom Kontos pointed out in the latest Kontos Kommentary that, “Wholesale prices continued to soften in June as used vehicle supply continues to recover, putting downward pressure on prices despite healthy retail demand and minimal new-vehicle incentives.”

And the price declines in June proved to span across the board, as Kontos noted that the “softening price environment in June impacted virtually all car, truck and crossover segments.”

The average price for all car segments came in at $8,613 for June, down from $8,932 in May.

For trucks, the story was much the same with average prices falling to $9,563 from May’s average of $9,781.

Crossovers saw a slight decline, as well, falling to $12,582 last month from May’s rate of $12,933.

The end of June also means 2013 has met its half-year mark, with wholesale prices down 3.1 percent year-over-year, which Kontos says is “consistent with my expectations that prices will soften modestly this year based on anticipated supply growth of approximately 5 percent.”

Kontos also broke down wholesale price data by type of seller. First up, prices for used vehicle remarketed by manufacturers were up 5.7 percent month-over-month in June, “but were down 0.9 percent year-over-year and were based on limited volume,” Kontos said.

Most other groups of sellers saw declines, as well. Prices for fleet/lease consignors down 2.9 percent sequentially, while dealer consignors saw a 1.6-percent average price decrease versus May 2013 and a 5.2-percent downturn year-over-year.

Loosening supply and falling auction prices aren’t the only pieces of good news for the dealers stemming from June results.

Total used sales for June came in at 4.49 million, per CNW Research data. This is up from 4.39 million used sales in May and 4.38 million during the same period last year.

The June sales results bring the year-to-date total to 20.14 million used sales, up from 19.39 million used sales during the same period of 2012.
