WASHINGTON, D.C. -

The National Automobile Dealers Association said two franchised dealers — one who already is a U.S. Representative — will testify at a congressional hearing today urging members of a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee to support a bill that would repeal a mandate that requires dealers to provide a rarely used booklet on insurance loss data to their customers.

Multi-franchise dealer Jack Fitzgerald and U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., a Chevrolet dealer, will be sharing support for H.R. 5859.

Since 1991, NADA explained, the government has mailed these reports to franchised dealerships across the country.

The association indicated that Fitzgerald — owner of Fitzgerald Auto Mall with dealerships in Florida, Maryland and Pennsylvania — will tell members of the House subcommittee that consumers do not use the booklet and those few who do, find it of little value.

Rep. Kelly in his testimony is expected to say that his dealership sales staff advises their customers to contact their insurance agent to obtain accurate insurance information.

NADA found that 96 percent of the dealers it surveyed said that none of their customers has ever asked to see the information.

Officials mentioned the NADA-supported legislation was introduced by Reps. Gregg Harper, R-Miss., and Bill Owens, D-N.Y.
