WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. -

Dealers racked up the third-best-ever sales month for certified pre-owned vehicles as the industry enjoyed a June that included the best new-vehicle seasonally adjusted annual rate since November 2007 and used-vehicle sales above initial projections.

Autodata Corp. tallied up last month’s CPO sales during the Fourth of July holiday weekend and found they came in at 185,463 units, representing a 14.4-percent jump above June of last year.

As mentioned, the June total was the third-highest level ever, but it was 0.8 percent below May’s tally. However, certified pre-owned sales in May represented the second-strongest month in the history of the CPO market, coming in at 187,044 units.

Since the second quarter included those two near-record performances, Autodata determined the span easily represented the best quarter for CPO sales ever.

Dealers turned 548,676 CPO units during the second quarter, up 18.7 percent above the same quarter a year ago and 10.3 percent beyond what the industry posted during the first quarter of this year.

Autodata went on to highlight that June year-to-date sales came in at 1,046,400 units, up 14.1 percent versus the first six months of last year.

The firm pointed out there were 26 selling days in June and May of this year and 27 days in June of last year.

Taking a look at the June sales data by brand, Autodata indicated domestic’s piece of the CPO market increased year-over-year by 2.9 percent points to 34.5 percent. European’s share declined 0.6 percentage points to 15.8 percent.

The share for Asian’s brands dropped, too, but the 2.4 percentage point gain kept these OEMs with the largest segment of the CPO market at 49.7 percent.

Autodata went on to mention that June new-car sales came in at 1,404,434 units up 9.2 percent from June a year ago. The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) was 15.9 million, the highest since November 2007.

And as Auto Remarketing reported here, CNW Research noticed June used-vehicle sale came in stronger than projected as there were 4.49 million used sales in June, representing a combination of metal moving at franchised and independent dealers as well as private-party transactions.
