Hyundai Canada’s charitable foundation, Hyundai Hope on Wheels, took another big step toward its goal with $100,000 donation to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to support children and youth receiving cancer care at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.
Hyundai Canada launched Hyundai Hope on Wheels in February, announcing plans to contribute $4 million to support pediatric oncology centers throughout Canada in 2025. It made significant progress toward that target in June with a $250,000 donation to BC Children’s Hospital.
In a news release, Hyundai Canada said some 70 children are diagnosed with cancer each year at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and noted childhood cancer survival rates have increased from 20% to 80% over the past 50 years, largely due to clinical trials and advanced therapies provided by the hospital’s oncology department. Pediatric oncology survival rates have improved by more than 30% in just the past decade.
“We are so inspired by Hyundai Hope on Wheels’ commitment to support childhood cancer care across the country and truly grateful for this generous gift that will make a huge difference for kids and their families facing a cancer diagnosis at the Alberta Children’s Hospital,” Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation president and CEO Saifa Koonar said.
Alberta Children’s Hospital delivers specialized care to young patients in southern Alberta, including Red Deer, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. Its oncology team provides comprehensive care for children with cancer, treating hundreds of patients each year.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels marked the donation with its signature handprint ceremony, in which children affected by cancer are invited to put their painted handprints on a white Hyundai vehicle, alongside family, care teams and community members.
“We are proud to be here today presenting this donation to the amazing hospital and foundation team in Calgary,” said Hyundai Canada director of human resources and administration Kirk Merrett, Hyundai Hope on Wheels’ administrator. “Every contribution makes a difference in children’s lives and futures, and we are grateful to continue bringing handprint ceremonies and donations to communities across Canada.”
