The Clone Wars aren’t just in a galaxy far, far away. They’re right here on the roads in Canada.
Cloned VINs are fact, not science fiction. According to data from Carfax Canada, VIN cloning — a type of auto fraud in which criminals copy legitimate vehicle identification numbers onto stolen vehicles — affects more than 372,000 vehicles nationwide.
Carfax’s research has identified Canada’s most VIN-cloned vehicles, a list dominated by trucks, with pickups occupying six of the top 10 spots.
No. 1 is the Ford F-150, which should not come as a surprise as the F-Series has been Canada’s best-selling vehicle for years. In fact, F-Series teammates F-350 (sixth) and F-250 (ninth) are also among the six Ford vehicles on the 10 most-cloned list.
The RAM 1500 Series, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Escape and Chevrolet Silverado round out the top five.
In a news release, Carfax said buying a vehicle with a fraudulent VIN, even without knowing it, can face severe consequences, including law enforcement seizing the vehicle and insurance companies denying coverage for repairs or theft. The buyer could face a substantial loss in the vehicle’s resale value and/or be unable to sell or trade in the vehicle at all.
“No matter what type of used vehicle you’re buying, it should be an exciting moment in the lives of Canadians,” Carfax Canada president Shawn Vording said. “Buying a used vehicle privately offers choice and value, but it can also expose consumers to serious risks if the vehicle they purchase has a compromised VIN.”
In response, Vording said, Carfax has introduced VIN Fraud Check, designed to complement the company’s vehicle history reports by identifying potential fraud before purchasing a used vehicle.
“Our customers told us they are concerned about the continued vehicle theft and fraud problem and wanted a better way to help protect themselves from this issue when looking for a new used vehicle,” Vording said. “VIN Fraud Check is designed to give private buyers the information needed to walk away from a suspicious deal before it becomes their problem.”
The new product is Carfax Canada’s latest fraud detection tool, joining Vehicle Monitoring and VIN Fraud Check for dealers, which the company said use a proprietary algorithm to analyze billions of records to identify signs of potentially suspicious VIN history to help Canadians detect fraud faster.
