Artificial intelligence is the latest wave in the automotive world, and AutoTrader is diving right in.

AutoTrader has launched an integration with ChatGPT, which the company said makes it the first Canadian vehicle marketplace directly available on the popular AI platform.

The integration — a product of a “close partnership” with ChatGPT developer OpenAI — allows users to search for vehicles through AI chat using natural and intuitive language in English and French.

The rollout is part of AutoTrader’s AI-first strategy, designed to evolve the marketplace as car shopping evolves and consumer behavior shifts by using artificial intelligence to anticipate consumers’ needs.

AutoTrader said it has long prioritized AI in its marketplace to improve the user experience and help shoppers easily find the cars they’re looking for. With the rise of conversational interfaces, the company said, extending the marketplace to ChatGPT was the logical next step.

“We’ve seen tremendous change in how Canadians shop for cars,” chief product officer Justin Re said, “and our focus on innovation continues to shape how we respond to those shifts in the car-shopping journey. … Following ChatGPT’s App Store announcement, we moved quickly to bring our marketplace to the platform, giving shoppers access to our expansive marketplace through a single, intuitive AI chat.”

AutoTrader can be used on ChatGPT by connecting the AutoTrader app once via the ChatGPT “Apps” section. From there users can search for vehicles directly through the AI chat.

Users can ask ChatGPT targeted questions during their vehicle search — for example, if they’re looking for a spacious SUV or a dependable truck, a specific model or brand, a fuel-powered car or an EV, or availability in a particular region.

Relevant listings from the AutoTrader marketplace are then displayed directly in the chat, the company said, where one click can then take users to vehicle listing pages on AutoTrader to view more information and connect with the seller.

The company said dealers who use AutoTrader to host their vehicle inventory can expect additional exposure and will be able to reach more engaged shoppers.
