CARY, N.C. -

Based on reports shared by automakers with Auto Remarketing Canada, 2019 was another strong year for the certified pre-owned vehicle market in Canada, with multiple OEMs reporting sales records.

For example, Mercedes-Benz had its best-ever year for CPO sales, moving 14,223 units and beating prior-year figures by 2.8%. That record year included five record months (January, February, July, November and December).

Speaking of the latter, the 1,130 CPO vehicles sold in December was up 31.9% year-over-year.

CPO penetration of pre-owned sales at Mercedes for the year, at 82.3%, was the strongest it has ever been, the company said.

Subaru not only had its best year ever for certified pre-owned, it crossed the 4,000-unit threshold for the first time, said Jordan Beattie, who is manager of business management and certified pre-owned at Subaru Canada.

Specifically, Subaru’s CPO sales for the year were at 4,078 units, up from 3,423 in 2018. For the final month of the year, Subaru sold 296 certified vehicles, compared to 244 in December 2018.

Nissan had 15,478 certified sales in 2019, compared to 9,873 in 2018. It closed the year with 923 CPO sales in December, compared to 831 a year earlier.

Infiniti posted 2,043 certified sales for the year, up from 1,156 sales in 2018.  December CPO sales climbed from 73 to 159.

At Hyundai, the company had the strongest sales year for the H-Promise CPO program since 2014, moving 10,855 units. That was up 33% year-over-year, according to the company.  It also celebrated its best December sales ever, having sold 745 CPO vehicles for a 49% hike.

“These outstanding sales are the result of more Hyundai dealers than ever taking advantage of the value in the H-Promise program,” Charles Plewes, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp.’s manager of CPO and remarketing, said via email.

Next up, Toyota had 34,702 CPO sales in 2019, compared to 35,719 in 2018. It finished the year with 2,502 CPO sales in December, against 2,455 certified sales a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Lexus sold 4,667 certified vehicles last year, compared to 5,134 in 2018. In December, it posted 363 CPO sales, versus 369 in December 2018.
