There has been a coup in the Canadian electric vehicle market.

The king has been overthrown, and taking his place as the new EV leader stands a general.

General Motors was Canada’s No. 1-selling EV automaker through the first half of 2025, the company announced, citing S&P Global Mobility data on Canadian new vehicle total registrations, surpassing Tesla, which has long dominated EV sales.

And that’s not a fluke, GM said, adding it has now topped the market for three consecutive quarters.

GM’s share of the market in the second quarter this year was almost triple what it was in Q2 2024, rising from sixth place at 8.1% to first at 23.2% in 2025.

“For the past two years, GM has led the Canadian auto industry in total sales, and now that leadership includes EVs,” GM Canada vice president of sales, service and marketing Shane Peever said. “With 13 EVs across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac, we’re offering Canadians more choice than ever, and that’s bringing new customers into the GM family.”

Those 13 models among GM’s Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands include the Chevy Equinox EV, which the company said ranked second in the compact all-electric SUV segment for the first six months of the year, and the Cadillac OPTIQ, which led the luxury EV category in new registrations.

GM said Cadillac led the luxury EV market through June with a 30.5% share.

EVs now account for 8.7% of GM Canada’s total vehicle sales, the automaker said, adding more than 60% of its EV buyers are new to GM’s brands.

GM said its 13 EV models are the most of any manufacturer in Canada. The vehicles include full-size trucks such as the Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV and GMC HUMMER EV; Cadillac luxury SUVs like the Escalade IQ, OPTIQ and LYRIQ; affordable and Chevy’s Equinox EV and Blazer EV SUVs; and commercial EVs from BrightDrop.
