Change is a constant in the car business.
Just not when it comes to J.D. Power’s Canada ALG Residual Value Awards.
For the seventh consecutive year, Toyota claimed the top prize among mass-market brands, while its sister brand Lexus was No. 1 among premium brands for their 2026 model vehicles’ residual value.
The awards recognize the vehicle models and brands projected to hold the highest percentage of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price after four years for mass market vehicles and after three years for premium vehicles.
Seven Toyota models were honored as the best among their segments, the most of any brand. Lexus took three model-level awards, tying Mercedes-Benz for most in the premium sector.
In all, 13 brands earned awards in 26 segments. J.D. Power evaluated 294 model lines through analysis of used-vehicle performance, brand outlook and product competitiveness. To account for differences across trim levels, model averages are weighted based on the percentage share relative to the entire model line.

While Toyota swept the top awards for manufacturers, General Motors also had a strong showing, with nine segment awards among its three brands — four for GMC, three for Chevrolet and two for Cadillac.
In a news release, J.D. Power called residual value “a critical input” for calculating lease payments and trade-in values and a key metric for consumers and automakers, reflecting long-term vehicle appeal and brand stability.
“Brands that consistently retain higher RVs have a broad vehicle lineup that appeals to many customers, and with that, they do not overcomplicate their vehicles,” J.D. Power managing director of ALG customer success Danny Battaglia said. “Additionally, pricing plays a big role here. Staying competitive in the market while maintaining their reliability and emotional appeal ensures the top brands stay at the top.”
