Black Book again used the words “healthy’ and “increasingly selective” to describe what’s going on in the wholesale market, which posted a 0.48% dip in overall prices last week.

According to its latest installment of Market Insights released on Tuesday, Black Book reported that car prices declined 0.39% while values for trucks and SUVs decreased 0.51%.

“Auction activity remained healthy, with strong sell-through rates and active online bidding, but pricing was increasingly selective,” Black Book said in the report.

“Wholesale market activity remained stable this week, with auction conversion holding at 57%, unchanged from the previous week, reflecting steady buyer participation despite continued pricing pressure,” analysts continued.

“Auction activity reflected a healthy but increasingly selective wholesale environment, with demand remaining strongest for retail-ready SUVs, pickups, and well-equipped late-model vehicles,” Black Book reiterated. “Softer performance was concentrated among less desirable configurations, average-condition vehicles, and select EV models.

“Buyers remained active but disciplined, placing greater emphasis on vehicle condition, trim level, equipment, and expected retail demand when bidding,” analysts went on to say.

So, how did those overall observations translate into specific value movements? Here are a few vehicle segments that Black Book mentioned:

—Values for compact cars declined 0.72% last week, compared with 0.23% during the previous week.

—Prices for mainstream full-size crossovers and SUVs between 2 and 8 years old decreased 0.53% last week, bringing the segment’s four-week average decline to 0.46% per week. In contrast, values for full-size luxury crossovers and SUVs showed a sharp improvement, with depreciation slowing to 0.24% last week from 1.06% a week earlier.

—Values for full-size pickup now have declined for 11 consecutive weeks, averaging a drop of 0.38% per week. Analysts noted last week’s decrease of 0.74% was the segment’s steepest single-week drop since the middle of December.

Finally, perhaps the wholesale market isn’t the only place in the car business that’s “healthy,” as Black Book estimated the used retail days to turn continues to stay at roughly 34 days.

“As always, our team of analysts are focused on keeping their eyes on the market for developing trends and gathering insights,” Black Book said.
