Funny how life has a way of putting your own words to the test.
In just over a week from now, I was supposed to take the stage at Used Car Week to deliver a TED-style talk titled, “The Unlikely Executive: Leading Through Pressure, Purpose & Perspective.”
It’s a message I’ve spent years developing through my own experiences. The highs and lows of business, personal struggles, overcoming addiction, and learning that some of life’s greatest lessons come from its hardest seasons.
But sometimes God has a different plan.
A couple of weeks ago, my wife, Chesney, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
We are incredibly grateful that her particular diagnosis comes with a very high cure rate, approximately 98%. That’s a blessing we don’t take lightly. But we also know the road ahead includes chemotherapy, treatments, surgery, uncertainty, and a year that will challenge us physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

And just like that, my perspective on pressure changed again.
I’ve spent much of my career leading companies, managing hundreds of people, making difficult decisions, and navigating situations where the stakes were incredibly high.
But none of those pressures compare to watching someone you love prepare for a battle you wish you could fight for them.
Here’s what I’m learning: Pressure doesn’t always show up when you’re ready for it. And leadership isn’t always about pushing through. Sometimes it’s about knowing when to step away, be present, and trust God with what you cannot control.
For that reason, I won’t be attending Used Car Week this year.
That’s a difficult decision because this industry and the people in it have been such a meaningful part of my journey. I was genuinely looking forward to sharing my story, reconnecting with old friends, and celebrating the accomplishments of so many deserving individuals.
But right now, my most important responsibility isn’t in a boardroom or on a stage. It’s at home, standing beside my wife.
Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God. Those words have never felt more relevant.
So we’re going to keep the faith, trust in the Lord, take this journey one day at a time, and keep moving forward.
To my friends, colleagues, and the entire Used Car Week family, I wish you an incredible event. I’ll miss seeing everyone this year, but I look forward to reconnecting soon.
And if there’s one thing I’d leave you with from the talk I won’t get to deliver, it’s this:
Sometimes the greatest demonstration of leadership isn’t how much pressure you can carry. It’s having the wisdom to recognize what matters most when that pressure arrives.
Faith. Family. Purpose. Perspective.
Everything else can wait.
