General Motors Aims to Recognize Unsung Illinois Heroes

By implementing its “Our Town, Our Heroes” program, General Motors hopes to honor, recognize and reward local heroes across Illinois who are driving positive change in their communities. Just who are these local heroes?
GM officials noted that teachers, coaches, veterans, parents, friends and everyone in between who inspire others and drive positive change will be spotlighted by the program this year.
Providing some background on the program, it was launched in February 2011, and aims to recognize the unsung heroes of the Midwest’s communities.
Beginning this past Monday and continuing through November, Illinois residents can visit DrivingtheMidwest.com and nominate someone who inspires them and is making a difference in their community, the company explained.
Then, finalists will be chosen once per month, and the public can log on and vote for their favorite hero.
"We want to recognize the unsung heroes who inspire others and make a difference in the community," said Brian Goebel, GM North Central Region communications manager.
"We were blown away by their stories last year and look forward to highlighting inspiring people across Illinois again this year,” he added.
What’s at stake for the nominees?
The “hero” with the most votes, as well as the nominator, will each receive a one-week loan of an all-new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle and a special vehicle delivery with their family and friends.
Also, new for 2012, the winning hero will also receive $500 in gift cards, and the second place hero and his or her nominator will each receive a one-week vehicle loan.
