GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Interestingly, though many dealers have voiced concern over the lack of off-rental supply flowing through the lanes during the past few years, Black Book’s Ricky Beggs explained that buyers are showing “hesitant interest” when it comes to rental cars at auction.

Though overall, comments from Black Book survey personnel indicated a “more stable market in most cases,” the only market segment that was struggling last week was rental.

“Several reports mentioned larger offerings of previous rental units and as one report indicated, only about one of every three units sold. We will be tracking these closely to see if the sellers or the buyers make the first move to improve sales conversion rates,” Beggs explained in the latest “Beggs on the Used Car Market” video report.

That said, the late spring market remained prominently stable, a trend which Beggs contributed to the “need to adjust fewer vehicles during the past week than any week of 2013.”

Last week, less than 1,140 price adjustments were made to vehicle per day, which resulted in none of the 10 car segment types Black Book tracks increasing and an overall average segment dollar change of -$14.

“This is the only weekly time period in the past three months with no increasing car segments week over week, while the more consistent changes across all lines had the overall percentage change of -.10 percent with the lowest percentage decline of -.18 percent for the entry midsize cars (-$13) followed by the -.14 percent change for the premium sporty cars (-$54),” Beggs reported.

The truck segments remained flat with an overall average change level of zero percent.

“The fact that eight of the fourteen segments increased this past week, following the previous two weeks where eight and nine segments had increased, shows a continuing pattern of interest within the trucks,” Beggs said.

Buyers were showing interest in the compact SUVs and midsize SUVs, with these segments’ average prices rising by $54 and $38, respectively.

“Taking a slightly different turn came within the full-size pickups at -$2 in the most recent week after the previous seven weeks of increases for this segment,” Beggs concluded.
