Toyota Announces 800K-Unit Recall

Toyota is recalling more than 800,000 vehicles from the 2012 and 2013 model years for a problem with the air conditioning condenser unit housing that could lead to issues with air bags.
Toyota Motor Sales USA said in a statement Thursday it was voluntarily recalling 803,000 model-year 2012 and 2013 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Venza vehicles in the U.S. to fix the aforementioned air conditioning condenser unit housing.
All together, there are 885,264 units involved in the global recall of these vehicles.
“In the involved vehicles, water from the air conditioning condenser unit housing could leak onto the airbag control module and cause a short circuit, resulting in illumination of the airbag warning light,” the company noted. “In some instances, the air bag(s) could become disabled or could inadvertently deploy.”
And in what the company described as “limited instances,” there’s the possibility of the steering assist function breaking down if there is damage to a communication line in the airbag control module.
Affected vehicle owners will be alerted via first-class mail to bring their vehicles into a Toyota store for the fix.
Explaining the fix, Toyota said, “To remedy this issue, Toyota dealers will apply sealant and install a cover to the air conditioning condenser unit housing seam located above the airbag control module.”
