When it comes to residual values, there’s a new king — two of them, actually.
After four consecutive years on top, Honda and Lexus have ceded their crowns to Toyota and Tesla, which were named as best performers in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards.
Toyota claimed the mass market title with six models winning the awards for their vehicle segment — the GR Supra, GR86, Camry, Sequoia, Tundra and Tacoma — twice as many as any other brand.
Tesla was one of three brands with three model-level winners, with the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck taking three of the four EV categories.
“Strong wholesale retention, solid brand value and a disciplined approach on rental fleet and incentives propelled Toyota to the top spot among mainstream brands,” J.D. Power ALG customer success managing director Danny Battaglia said. “Toyota topped six segments for 2026, including a four-peat for GR Supra and five-peat for Tundra.
“Tesla avoided the high incentives of other luxury battery electric vehicle brands in 2025. That helped earn it the top rank among luxury brands with the highest performers in three segments, including the refreshed Model Y, which included the introduction of a lower-priced base version and additional content on mid-level trims.”

BMW and Toyota’s sister brand Lexus also won three model awards. Two of BMW’s winners — the 3 Series and 4 Series — shared the same award, as they finished in a three-way tie with the Cadillac CT4 in the compact premium car segment.
General Motors also earned three awards, two for its Chevrolet brand and one for Cadillac.
The awards recognize the 2026 vehicle models projected to hold the highest percentage of their manufacturer’s suggested retail price at open auction after three years of ownership. J.D. Power evaluated 300 models through analysis of used-vehicle performance, brand outlook and product competitiveness.
For model-year 2026, 14 brands received awards in 26 segments.
