Everyone loves Friday — the work week is done and the coming weekend offers limitless possibilities.

But according to data from CARFAX, Friday has a dark side.

The vehicle history report provider’s research found Friday is the riskiest day for car accidents for most U.S. drivers, with at least 42 states reporting more accidents on Fridays than on any other day of the week.

CARFAX said the end-of-work-week rush is likely a contributing factor, a view reinforced by data showing Sunday is the day with the fewest incidents reported in almost all states.

“Drivers need to stay vigilant anytime they’re on the road,” Bedford, Mass., police chief John Fisher said. “Law enforcement responds to thousands of crashes on Fridays, often due to heavy traffic, fatigue and distracted or impaired driving.

“Those incidents can cause major delays, damage and serious injuries. While Saturdays see more fatalities, according to NHTSA, the sheer volume of Friday accidents makes it one of the most dangerous days to drive.”

Mississippi has the most dangerous Fridays, CARFAX said, with more than 18% of all accidents happening on that day, with California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan among other states with high Friday accident rates.

Just six of the 48 states had the most accidents on other days: Vermont, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Colorado and Utah on Tuesdays and Montana on Wednesday.

The company pointed out many of th0se road incidents resulted in minor damage for the vehicles involved.

“Not all accidents are deal-breakers for car shoppers,” CARFAX vice president of data acquisition Faisal Hasan said. “CARFAX has the most accident, damage and service information.

“Reviewing the vehicle history report can help consumers assess details – from the point of impact on a car because of an accident to the damage severity. This gives buyers and sellers a clear picture of how these factors affect a vehicle’s condition and value, which can help them make better-informed decisions.”
