The certified pre-owned market closed the first half of the year up roughly 2% from 2024, but the final month of the first half was a tough one — though that was expected.

Citing its analysis of Motor Intelligence data, Cox Automotive said there were 200,950 CPO sales in June, which is down 3.7% year-over-year and off 13.1% from May.  Certified pre-owned had a 13.7% share of used cars sold by dealers, Cox said.

“The decrease in CPO sales was expected, as June had fewer sales days than both last month and last year, and did not include the holiday weekend,” the company said in a Data Point report.

There were 232,267 CPO sales in April, Cox said, followed by 231,137 in May. Both were up, respectively, from each of the three prior years, according to the data set, which includes 2022-2025 figures.

The June 2025 CPO sales figure was lower than each of the last three Junes, according to the analysis.

As of June 25, Cox Automotive was forecasting a range of 2.4 million to 2.6 million CPO sales for full-year 2025. Its original forecast was 2.5 million.

Motor Intelligence figures shared by Cox Automotive earlier this year indicate there were 2,546,155 certified sales in 2024, down from 2,641,622 in 2023.
