Minivans top list of most-driven cars; EVs log fewest miles at highest price

Believe it or not, the most driven vehicle in America is a minivan. And so are the second- and third-most driven.
The latest study by iSeeCars set out to identify the 3-year-old vehicles that have logged the most — and least — miles and analyze the average cost per 1,000 miles driven based on their average price when new.
Turns out the most driven vehicle, according to iSeeCars’ analysis of the odometer readings and historical prices of more than 1 million vehicles sold from November 2024 to April 2025, is the Chrysler Pacifica minivan, which averages 20,882 miles per year.
At an original price of $47,615, that comes to an average of $2,280 per 1,000 miles, well below the industry average of $3,593, based on averages of 12,307 miles per year and a $44,223 purchase price.
The Pacifica was followed by the Chrysler Voyager (19,946 miles per year) and the Pacifica hybrid (19,575) on the most-driven list, with the Chevrolet Malibu (18,762) coming in fourth as the most driven sedan and Chevy’s Suburban (18,317), the top SUV, in fifth.
Overall, the study found more miles are driven by hybrids than any other powertrain. Three-year-old hybrids have logged an average of 12,924 miles per year, outdistancing gas-powered vehicles (12,355), plug-in hybrids (11,614) and electric vehicles, which not only were last in miles driven with 10,686, but also had the highest new purchase price of $68,692, for an average of $6,428 per 1,000 miles.
Hybrids, on the other hand, had the lowest price ($38,495) to go with the highest mileage, giving them the lowest cost per 1,000 miles — $2,978, $525 less than gas vehicles, more than $2,000 less than plug-in hybrids and almost $3,500 less than EVs.
“Electric vehicles cost more than twice as much as hybrids to drive, and substantially more than gasoline or plug-in hybrids,” iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer said. “This reflects both the high price of electric cars and their limited use due to range anxiety and charging infrastructure challenges.
“Hybrids tend to be lower-priced models that are also driven the most per year, likely due to their low fuel costs. This gives them a cost-to-drive advantage over every other fuel type, particularly electric cars.”
iSeeCars’ analysis found the car driven the least — not including premium and performance cars — was the Mazda MX-5 Miata at 5,073 miles per year, which was among three Mazdas in that list’s top five. Second was the GMC Hummer EV (5,205), followed by the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF (5,375), MINI Hardtop 2-Door EV (6,726) and Mazda MX-30 EV (6,755).
The top 10 also included the MINI Convertible (6,929), Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid (7,039), Ford Mustang (7,142), MINI Hardtop 2-Door (7,781) and Ford F-150 Lightning (7,877).
The lowest cost per 1,000 miles belonged to the Mitsubishi Mirage, which averaged 16,342 miles per year with an initial cost of $18,281 for an average of $1,119 per 1,000 miles. Others at the top of that list include the Kia Rio ($1,326), Chevy Spark ($1,345), Nissan Versa ($1,3904) and Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ($1,408).
In contrast, the most expensive car to drive per 1,000 miles was the Porsche 911, which was driven just 2,961 miles per year with a price of $179,739 for an average cost of $60,708 per 1,000 miles.
