These vehicles are durability kings

Phong Ly notes that the “iconic and indestructible” Toyota Land Cruiser has roots dating back to 1950 and is designed to last at least 25 years. Many developing countries where off-road driving is the norm rely on the vehicle, Ly said.
“Like the Land Cruiser, the Toyota Sequoia is built on a truck platform, so it has the durability of a truck and seating for up to eight passengers, making it a capable family hauler that is able to endure high mileage,” said Ly, who is chief executive officer for automotive research firm and car search engine iSeeCars.com, in a news release.
iSeeCars’ latest study shows the “Longest Lasting Cars to Reach 200,000 Miles and Beyond,” and the company says full-size SUVs, led by Toyota models, are most likely to reach that mileage milestone. The first-ranked Toyota Land Cruiser and the second-ranked Toyota Sequoia lead the way.
The company says truck-like SUVs and pickup trucks account for the most vehicles on the list of those that owners can expect to reach 200,000 miles.
“However, consumers looking for vehicles in other categories can find a reliable high-mileage hauler to suit their needs,” Ly said in a news release.
Toyota also shows strength in the study’s list of longest lasting vehicles by segment. In addition to the Toyota Land Cruiser being the top full-size SUV in the category, the Toyota 4Runner is the longest-lasting mid-size SUV, the Toyota Tundra is the longest-lasting full-size truck, the Toyota Avalon leads in the large sedan category, the Toyota Prius is the longest-lasting hybrid car and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is the longest-lasting hybrid SUV.
Non-Toyotas also shine
Other carmakers besides Toyota also had good showings in the survey, in which iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 15.8 million pre-owned cars sold in 2019.
Six American full-size SUVs account for the remaining SUVs on the list of longest-lasting vehicles to reach 200,000 miles. Those include the third-ranked Ford Expedition, the Chevrolet Suburban at No. 4, the sixth-ranked Chevrolet Tahoe, the GMC Yukon XL at No. 7, the ninth-ranked GMC Yukon, and the 14th-ranked Lincoln Navigator.
“All manufactured by General Motors, the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, and Chevrolet Tahoe are built on the same platform and share many parts, which could explain why these popular family vehicles are all likely to last 200,000 miles,” Ly said.
Ly continued, “Similarly, the Expedition and the lone luxury car on the list, the Navigator, also share the same manufacturer and are similar vehicles with the main difference being that the Navigator is under Ford’s luxury Lincoln marque.”
Three Japanese pickup trucks made the list.
Those include the 10th-ranked Honda Ridgeline, the Toyota Tundra at No. 11, and the 15th-ranked Toyota Tacoma.
“The Honda Ridgeline’s unique unibody design gives it the function of a pickup truck with the handling and efficiency of a crossover SUV, while achieving the reliability ratings characteristic of the Honda brand,” Ly said.
“Meanwhile, the Toyota Tacoma and the Toyota Tundra are known for being indestructible, which explains why they are much more likely than the average vehicle to reach the 200,000-mile mark.”
Additional highlights
The 13th-ranked Honda Odyssey is the lone minivan on the list.
“Minivans generally offer more cargo space, better gas mileage, and added convenience features when compared to full-size SUVs, but lack the all-weather performance and towing capacity,” Ly.
Ly continued, “The Honda Odyssey consistently earns the distinction of being at the top of its class thanks to its handling, functionality and safety.”
Other highlights of the survey: The Honda Ridgeline is the longest-lasting light-duty pickup truck; the Honda Odyssey is the longest-lasting passenger car (excluding SUVs and pickup trucks); and the Audi TT is the longest-lasting sports car.
Breaking things out by brand, Toyota, Honda, GMC, Chevrolet and Ford produce the cars most likely to reach 200,000 miles.
Finally, looking past the 200,000 milestone, iSeeCars listed the vehicles most likely to reach 300,000 miles. The top five on that list are the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Sequoia, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon XL.
