FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

AutoNation’s new-vehicle unit sales for May saw a significant decrease year-over-year due in part to a sharp decline in import sales.

The automotive retailer announced Thursday that its new-vehicle unit sales totaled 16,347 vehicles during the 24 selling days of May, marking a 15-percent decrease as compared to May 2010.

Contributing to the decline in sales was the import segment, with 7,110 vehicles sold, down a total of 30 percent year-over-year.

The news was not all bad though. Domestic sales were up 3 percent year-over-year with 5,995 units sold.

The premium luxury segment also saw a slight uptick in sales with 3,242 vehicles sold, up 1 percent versus May 2010.

New Marketing Agreement

In other news from the company, AutoNation announced Thursday that it has entered into a long-term marketing agreement with the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, a division of Nova Southeastern University.

Under the Agreement, the museums’s Studio School and its education and community programming will be renamed the "AutoNation Academy of Art and Design."

The contribution will enable the museum to reach and serve a far larger audience, AutoNation stressed.

"Our ongoing support of art and culture in our community comes back to us tenfold knowing that every exhibition and educational program sparks creativity and brings enlightenment and joy to young and old alike,” said Mike Jackson, chairman and chief executive officer of AutoNation.

“We can think of no better investment in Fort Lauderdale than to make sure that art and culture of the highest caliber will always be a part of this community,” he added.
