Exclusive Preview: Capistrano VW Shares Tips for CPO Success

When it comes to getting a vehicle ready as a certified pre-owned unit, Capistrano Volkswagen doesn’t skimp on reconditioning.
In fact, the emphasis the dealership places on this aspect of the CPO process is part of what sets it apart from the competition, says used-car manager Harry Haber.
And it starts with the technicians doing the work on the car, as the San Juan Capistrano, Calif., dealership has its most experienced technicians servicing the certified pre-owned vehicles. Specifically, Haber said technicians Duane Clark and Dwight Truhlar began working with VW in the early 1970s.
“We have some guys that have been turning wrenches for a while,” Haber said.
“Instead of just having low-priced paid guys, we have probably the most expensive guys doing our work,” he continued. “This is because we want to make sure that when we do the work on the car, we have the best possible product available to our end customer.”
In essence, Haber explained, the dealership doesn’t approach CPO reconditioning by asking, “How can we cut costs to do the repair completely?” Instead, they ask themselves, “How can we give the customer the best possible car?”
But it’s not just the reconditioning that sets Capistrano VW apart, Haber says. Learn what else gives the dealership an edge by reading the full story in the "Used Car Manager" section of the June 1 print edition of Auto Remarketing.
