WASHINGTON, D.C. -

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials revealed General Motors’ recall of 50,000 crossovers from three of its main nameplates to correct a windshield wiper issue.

The recall covers the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia from the 2011 and 2012 model years currently registered in the following states, as well as the nation’s Capitol:

—Alaska
—Colorado
—Connecticut
—Delaware
—Idaho
—Illinois
—Indiana
—Iowa
—Maine
—Maryland
—Massachusetts
—Michigan
—Minnesota
—Montana
—Nebraska
—New Hampshire
—New Jersey
—New York
—North Dakota
—Ohio
—Pennsylvania
—Rhode Island
—South Dakota
—Utah
—Vermont
—West Virginia
—Wisconsin
—Wyoming
—District of Columbia

NHTSA officials explained snow or ice buildup on the windshield or on the wiper may restrict the movement of the wiper arm, causing the wiper arm to loosen and cause the wiper to become inoperative.

If that situation arises, officials fear driver visibility could be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM told federal officials the company will notify owners, instructing them to take their vehicles to a franchised dealer that will tighten the wiper arm nuts free of charge.

The OEM began the safety recall this week, according to NHTSA.
