DETROIT -

General Motors has announced a recall of almost 5,700 midsize pickups to correct an issue with the seatbelt warning function in these models.

Models involved include the early-model 2012 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, all of which were built between Aug. 27 and Oct. 21.

Breaking it down, 5,220 units are in the U.S., 210 are in Canada, 257 are in Mexico and nine have been exported to the Cayman Islands.

GM said it needs to replace the seatbelt buckle electrical connectors. Apparently, these connectors can potentially block the visual or audible warnings telling a driver to buckle up. An assembly plant audit revealed the issue, officials said.

The automaker stressed, however, that the seat belt itself still works and that there are no known injuries or crashes from this issue.

Owners of affected units will be sent notifications by the end of the month and can take their ride into a GM dealership to have the connector terminals swapped out for free.
