CHICAGO and IRVINE, Calif. -

As Americans celebrate Independence Day this week, Cars.com and Kelley Blue Book’s Kbb.com both shared some stars-and-stripes-themed perspective on the U.S. auto business that continues to gain momentum.

Cars.com released its latest American-Made Index, while Kbb.com has released its rankings of the 10 Cars That Reignite the American Dream.  Both company’s lists were unveiled on Monday.

Starting with the list from Cars.com, it wasn’t limited to Detroit, officials said.

“When people think about buying an ‘American’ car, they might just think automatically of the Detroit Three,” said Patrick Olsen, editor in chief at Cars.com. “In reality, this classification isn’t as cut and dry as it used to be.

“Today, Fiat owns a majority stake in Chrysler, companies like Toyota are increasing production of their vehicles in the U.S. and parts are coming in from all over the globe. Our index accounts for all of these factors to determine where vehicles rank.”

Topping the American-Made Index from Cars.com is the Toyota Camry, for the fourth year running.

Cars.com reported the narrowest margin ever between first and second place in the history of its American-Made Index, as the F-150 returned to the list in the second spot, with less than two days of average sales standing between it and the Camry.

Overall, Toyota, Honda and General Motors combined for eight of the 10 indexed vehicles.

Based on domestic parts content, final assembly point of vehicles, and U.S. sales, the annual index offers not only a glimpse of this blending within the industry, but also of consumers’ response.

“U.S. sales are a component of our index for a number of reasons,” said Olsen. “For one thing, it’s safe to say that the more a vehicle sells, the more U.S. workers are involved in production and delivery of the vehicle and the more U.S. dealers are profiting. Additionally, we think it’s valid to give credit for how American buyers embrace a vehicle.”

The full American-Made Index results and the U.S. states in which they are assembled are:

1. Toyota Camry, Ky. and Ind.
2. Ford F-150, Mich., and Mo.
3. Honda Accord, Ohio
4. Toyota Sienna, Ind.
5. Honda Pilot, Ala.
6. Chevrolet Traverse, Mich.
7. Toyota Tundra, Texas
8. Jeep Liberty, Ohio
9. GMC Acadia, Mich.
10. Buick Enclave, Mich.

Honda’s Accord dropped to third this year because of the re-entry of the F-150 on the index, and Chrysler’s Jeep Liberty appeared on the AMI for the first time, at number eight.

“For most car shoppers, how ‘American’ a vehicle is doesn’t impact their final purchase,” said Olsen. “However, according to a Cars.com survey we conducted in May, nearly 25 percent do prefer to buy American and nearly half of those people would be swayed to buy a foreign make if they knew it was assembled in the U.S. We do our index every year to make sure shoppers who do factor this into their purchase decision have the right information.”

KBB’s Detroit Honorees

As far as the list from Kbb.com, in a Fourth of July nod to the Big 3, the site named the iconic Chevrolet Corvette as lead car.

In compiling the list, editors were, essentially, honoring a resurgence of new vehicles from Detroit-based manufacturers, from tried-and-true models to those offering unique technolog, Kbb.com noted.

“While Detroit has certainly had its ups and downs in recent years, we would argue that the Motor City is on its way back to the top with exciting and innovative products coming off the line for new-car buyers,” said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for KBB.com. “With Independence Day around the corner, KBB.com honors prime examples of domestic vehicles that call the land of the free their home.”
