NHTSA Details Recalls by GM, Volvo and BMW

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed three different recalls by one domestic and two European automakers, covering more than 85,000 vehicles.
The largest of the three is for the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. NHTSA officials indicated General Motors is summoning 33,964 units manufactured between July 18 and Sept. 6.
These vehicles failed to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard No. 138, which is connected with the tire pressure monitoring system.
NHTSA reiterated the TPMS is designed the illuminate the tire pressure warning light when the pressure in a tire is 25 percent below the recommended cold tire pressure.
On these recalled GM models, officials believe the warning light will not illuminate until the tire pressure is more than 25 percent below the recommendation. They contend underinflated tires can result in tire overloading and overheating, which could lead to a blowout and possible crash. That crash could cause serious injury, and underinflated tires can also result in premature or irregular wear, poor handling and poor fuel economy.
GM franchised dealers have been instructed to update the body control module for free. The automaker began to notify potentially affected owners this month, but they can still contact Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 or GMC at (866) 996-9463.
Volvo Recall
NHTSA indicated Volvo Cars of North America is recalling the C70 from the 2006 through 2012 models years, units manufactured between Nov. 15, 2005 and July 31 of this year, as well as S60 from the 2011 and 2012 model years, vehicles made between July 14, 2010 and April 15 of this year.
The 19,600 effected units are equipped with an optional accessory spare tire kit, according to NHTSA. Officials stated these units failed to comply with requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard No. 110 for tire selection and rims.
A label contains incorrect information, and officials think a misprinted label could lead to improper tire inflation that could result in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
The automaker is instructing franchised dealer to inspect the recalled vehicle and install a new label as necessary. While Volvo has yet to outline an owner notification schedule, drivers of these models can contact the company at (201) 768-7300.
BMW Recalls
Finally, the recall of 32,084 BMW vehicles covers five different models from the years 2008 through 2011. NHTSA indicated the units included are the 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 and X6.
Officials contend engines in these models contain a circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump that can overheat. Should that happen, NHTSA said the pump could smolder and the vehicle could catch fire.
BMW is set to notify owners beginning next month, instructing them to go to franchised dealers who have been told to replace the auxiliary water pump for free.
In the meantime, potentially affected owners can contact the automaker at (800) 525-7417.
