Airbag Issue Triggers Another OEM Recall

A short time after four Japanese automakers announced they were recalling 3.4 million units worldwide because of an airbag issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a domestic OEM is going to conduct a campaign for late models with airbag problems.
Chrysler Group is recalling a total of 119,497 units — Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Charger vehicles from the 2011 and 2012 model years. These units were manufactured between April 11 and December 14 of 2011.
NHTSA indicated the affected vehicles may have improperly sized terminal crimps on the seat side-airbag wiring harness, which may cause the seat side-airbags to malfunction and illuminate the airbag warning light.
“In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment the airbags may not operate as designed, increasing the risk of injury,” officials said.
Chrysler told the agency it will notify owners, and franchised dealers will replace both driver and passenger seat airbag wiring harnesses, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month.
In the meantime, owners of these units can contact Chrysler at (800) 247-9753 and reference recall campaign No. N07.
