BALTIMORE -

Baltimore-area Hyundai dealers joined the automaker’s philanthropic organization, Hope On Wheels, this week to award the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Division of Pediatric Oncology of Baltimore with a $75,000 Hyundai Scholar Grant.

Dr. Christopher Gamper received Hope On Wheels’ most recent grant for his work in immunotherapy against cancer, in hopes of bringing powerful and less toxic tools to pediatric oncologists.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels Scholar Grants support principal investigators known as Hyundai Scholars in research and clinical programs aimed at improving the lives of children battling pediatric cancer.

During this week’s ceremony, Kathleen Hennessy, vice president, government affairs for Hyundai Motor Co., congratulated the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Division of Pediatric Oncology for its accomplishments in the field of pediatric cancer research.

The Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center has received $885,000 from Hope On Wheels since 2005.

“Hyundai Motor America has been a long-time champion of childhood cancer research, and we are greatly appreciative of their unwavering support. We share a mutual goal — finding cures for all childhood cancers. These types of funding sources are even more critical in these days of federal cutbacks of research funding,” said Dr. Donald Small, director of the pediatric oncology division at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

The Hyundai Scholar Grant was officially presented during a Hope On Wheels Handprint Ceremony at the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Division of Pediatric Oncology. Baltimore-area children battling cancer shared their inspirational stories and dipped their handprints in colorful paint, celebrating the courageous lives of the children faced with cancer and bringing the Hope On Wheels community of supporters together.

“Hyundai and its dealers remain committed to helping children in the fight against pediatric cancer," said John Krafcik president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America.

“We are dedicated to providing crucial research dollars that will lead to finding cures and better treatment protocols for these precious children impacted by cancer,” Krafcik continued. “We are proud of our long-standing partnership with Johns Hopkins and the important work they do every day in the fight against childhood cancer.”

Marking its 15th year in the fight against pediatric cancer, officials projected that Hope On Wheels will surpass $72 million in research and programmatic grants to pediatric cancer institutions nationwide by the end of the year.
