WASHINGTON, D.C. -

The National Highway Traffic Administration said BMW of North America is recalling 29,800 units to correct an issue with an engine belt idler.

BMW is bringing in certain model year 2009 through 2012 X5 xDrive 35d SAV diesel vehicles manufactured from Sept. 1, 2008, to Nov. 15. NHTSA indicated the engine belt idler pulley bolt could loosen and break over time.

If the engine belt idler pulley bolt breaks, officials fear the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

The agency said BMW will notify owners, and franchised dealers will replace and tighten the idler pulley bolt. NHTSA noted the recall is expected to begin next month.

In the meantime, owners may call BMW at (800) 525-7417 or send an email message to CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
