When it comes to customer service, CarMax is No. 1.

The national used-car retailer was selected by Newsweek as the nation’s top online automotive marketplace in the magazine’s America’s Best Customer Service 2026 list.

CarMax won the honor with a score of 87.09, ahead of Autotrader (85.84), Cars.com (84.85), Carvana (84.35) and CarGurus (83.55). The scores, compiled in partnership with Statista, are based on more than 200,000 customer evaluations rating likelihood of recommendation, quality of communication, professional competence, range of services, customer focus and accessibility.

In a news release, CarMax said the recognition affirms its “dedication to providing the most customer-centric car buying and selling experience in the industry,” built around an omnichannel experience designed to allow customers to buy and sell vehicles online, in-store or through a combination of both.

The company said the omnichannel focus has led to its highest net promoter score — measures how likely customers are to recommend a brand — since it began selling online, driven by record-high satisfaction among customers purchasing online or using a mix of online and in-store options.

CarMax operates more than 250 dealership locations nationwide.

“We’re really proud of this recognition because it reflects how we put the customer at the center of everything we do,” CarMax chief innovation and people officer Diane Cafritz said. “We’ll never stop innovating on behalf of our customers and continue to deliver an iconic customer experience.”

Newsweek’s eighth annual America’s Best Customer Service list honored 730 companies in 166 categories based on an independent survey of participants who have made purchases, used services or gathered information about products or services in the past three years.
