eBay is out to make buying and selling cars on its marketplace as easy as possible.

To that end, it has launched Secure Purchase, a system designed to simplify vehicle transactions by managing payment, financing, registration, ownership transfer and transport in one experience.

“Online automotive shopping offers unmatched selection and value, but it can be overwhelming for some buyers,” eBay general manager of vehicles Jesse Kiefer said. “Secure Purchase removes complexity and adds an extra layer of assurance for users on the marketplace.

“Shoppers can find exactly the vehicle they want at the right price from anywhere in the U.S., while sellers can close deals with complete confidence. And there’s no visit to the DMV.”

Vehicle transactions can be complicated, especially when they cross state lines, and eBay’s U.S. vehicle transaction data shows nearly 80% of purchases on the platform in 2024 involved buyers and sellers in different states.

The company said Secure Purchase verifies both the seller and buyer, automates the paperwork is automated and ensures the funds are digital and traceable.

The process begins with the buyer and seller verifying their identity and providing basic information about the vehicle. The buyer then selects financing, transportation, protection and insurance preferences and the seller uploads photos of the title, VIN and odometer reading — all of which. eBay said, are independently verified through national vehicle title databases for accuracy.

Following that, both parties digitally sign the required documents and transfer funds through the platform to initiate the registration and title transfer.

With consumers turning more to marketplaces for big-ticket items like cars as affordability concerns increase, eBay said it’s offering new tools, services and programs such as Secure Purchase and eBay Guaranteed Fit and Tire Installation to reinforce its commitment to making every part of vehicle ownership journey better.
