DETROIT -

Late last week, General Motors informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the automaker will recall 292,879 Chevrolet Cruze sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years in the United States.

Spokesperson Alan Adler indicated in a message to Auto Remarketing that the recall came because of a potential intermittent loss of brake assist in a certain engine-transmission combination.

In rare instances, GM acknowledged that a driver may need to exert extra brake pedal pressure to stop the vehicle. The automaker said it is aware of 27 alleged low-speed crashes but no injuries related to brake performance, which could include this issue.

Adler explained the condition is found in vehicles with the combination of the 1.4L Dual Overhead Cam Gasoline Turbo Engine and 6T40 FWD Automatic Transmission.

Adler said franchised dealers will remove and replace a microswitch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly.

Other engine and transmission combinations in the Cruze are not involved, according to the automaker.

“The Cruze is built in multiple plants globally but only those assembled at the Lordstown (Ohio) Assembly Plant are included in the U.S. recall,” Adler said.
