DETROIT and WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Today, General Motors confirmed to Auto Remarketing the details listed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about a recall of late-model Chevrolet and Buick sedans.

The campaign covers 42,904 vehicles, including the Chevrolet Malibu Eco from the 2013 model year and the Buick Regal and LaCrosse from the 2012 and 2013 model years. All of these units are equipped with eAssist light electrification.

NHTSA indicated these vehicles may have a condition in which the generator control module (GCM) may not function properly. The agency said this condition could cause a gradual loss of battery charge and the illumination of the malfunction indicator light.

“If the vehicle is continued to be driven, the engine may stall and/or the vehicle may not start. In addition, there may be a burning or melting odor, smoke, and possibly a fire in the trunk,” NHTSA officials said.

GM stated that it will notify owners and dealers will test the GCM and replace it, as necessary, free of charge.

“GM is cooperating with the NHTSA in responding to its additional questions about the service procedures involved. GM remains unaware of any injuries or crashes with these vehicles,” OEM spokesperson Alan Adler said in a statement to Auto Remarketing.

In the meantime, owners can contact GM at (800) 521-7300 and mention recall campaign No. 13136 for more details.
