TORRANCE, Calif. -

Along with a recall of about 1,600 Accords in the U.S. from the 2013 model year, Honda said last week that it will voluntarily expand a vehicle stability assist (VSA) non-compliance recall of the 2012 and 2013 Fit first announced in April.

The campaign now includes an additional 48,138 units in the U.S and 8,871 units in Canada. The automaker explained the vehicles will receive an update for the VSA system software free of charge.

Honda indicated the VSA system on certain 2012 and 2013 model-year Fit vehicles may allow yaw rates that exceed certain U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requirements. This issue was originally discovered during FMVSS compliance testing, and Honda is not aware of any related crashes or injuries.

The original recall initiated in April included only certain Fit Sport models in the U.S. With this expansion, a total of 91,920 Fit models sold in the U.S. and 10,887 vehicles in Canada are now included in the recall.

“Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from American Honda or Honda Canada,” officials said.

Honda noted that mailed notification will be sent to customers early next month.

Meanwhile, U.S. owners of vehicles from the affected model years can determine if their vehicles require repair by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009 and selecting option No. 4. Canadian customers can visit www.honda.ca/recalls or call (888) 9HONDA9.

2013 Accord Recall

In other company news, Honda also said it will voluntarily recall 1,659 model-year 2013 Accord vehicles in the United States to replace the fuel tank free of charge.

“The fuel tanks in these vehicles may not seal properly at a connection point on the top of the tank, creating the risk of a fuel leak,” officials said. “Honda is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue, which was discovered during warranty repairs.”

The automaker said mailed notification will be sent to customers on Aug. 2, instructing them to take their vehicles to a franchised dealership for the repair.
